The cruel and haughty wait for the fire of Hell or for stones pouring from the sky to punish them for their heinous acts. Many even disbelieve in any punishment from Allah. Those who commit atrocities against Palestinians and the millions of innocents wronged by the powerful seem to forget Allah’s severe retribution. Truly, Allah’s punishment is very near.

His forces are not always giants or costly weapons of war. Allah has an army that, though tiny, is far more powerful than supersonic missiles or hydrogen bombs. Allah’s army is unique.

To punish the arrogant Nimrod, who claimed to be a deity, a single mosquito defeated him. It entered his head through his nose, driving him completely insane until it killed him (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:258).

Similarly, a single spider became a shield against the furious Quraysh spies who were hunting the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) for a ransom (Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 3251, narrated by Abdullah ibn Abbas).

In another instance, the tiny Ababeel birds fought a war against a giant army of elephants, defeating them and safeguarding the Holy Kaaba (Surah Al-Fil, Chapter 105).

Furthermore, the people of Saba became excessively haughty because of their powerful Marib Dam, believing it could never break and that they would never be defeated. Yet, their arrogance was crushed by simple mice, which breached the dam and washed away their prosperity in the blink of an eye (Surah Saba 34:15-21).

You may also have read about Gog and Magog (Yajuj and Majuj), creatures that will empty the oceans, destroy lands, and consume every single grain on Earth. Humanity will possess no technology capable of defeating them. It is only when the Muslims supplicate to Allah for mercy and protection that they will be saved. Even then, Allah will not send an army of angels or giants to destroy the oppressors. Instead, He will send a simple worm—a parasite—that will attack their necks, causing them all to perish at once. When the Earth is covered by their corpses, Allah will send birds with necks like camels to carry their bodies away. Finally, a heavy rain will wash the Earth, leaving it clean and safe once more (Sahih Muslim 2937a and Sunan Ibn Majah 4075 & 4080).

O’ you who have become haughty and cruel, remember that Allah’s army comes in tiny packages, but it strikes with massive force. Be cautious when you see a simple insect, a bird, or a spider. Are they there by mere coincidence, or are they the instruments of your punishment while you plot acts of cruelty and arrogance? The hour of retribution may seem distant, but it is imminent, and it will arrive sooner or later.
